A boat for a dream
Pip the otter folded a paper boat before bed. He set it on his bedside table, tucked his blanket beneath his chin, and imagined the boat becoming just large enough for him. In his imagination, it rose gently past the curtains and into the evening sky.
The stars looked like little windows. Behind each one, Pip decided, someone was putting away a toy or choosing a bedtime book. He waved as the paper boat drifted by.
A very small yawn
Beside the moon, a comet gave a very small yawn. Its golden tail curled into a loose question mark. “Everyone expects me to hurry,” it said. “But tonight I would rather float.”
“My boat is excellent at floating,” Pip replied. “You can keep us company.” He made room for the comet’s reflection in the shiny paper at his feet. Together they sailed past a cloud shaped like a sleeping whale.
The quiet part of the sky
They found a quiet corner between two constellations. The comet stretched its tail across the dark like a soft ribbon. Pip counted three stars, then noticed that he did not need to count any more. He could simply watch them shine.
“What happens if I stop for a little while?” the comet wondered. “Perhaps,” said Pip, “the sky will keep your place.” The moon gave them a small, bright smile.
Back beside the window
The paper boat turned toward Pip’s window. The comet floated alongside until the curtains came into view, then settled into its quiet corner of the sky. “Good night, little captain,” it whispered.
Pip opened his eyes. His paper boat was on the bedside table, exactly where he had left it. Outside, one golden star shone above the river. He tucked his blanket close and saved the rest of the voyage for another night.
