A light of her own

At the edge of the wood, Lumi the fox made a lantern from a fallen leaf and a little jar of firefly light. The fireflies had agreed to come along until the moon rose. They blinked three times to say they were ready.

Lumi was taking the lantern to the old oak, where the woodland friends gathered to tell their evening stories. She imagined arriving with the brightest light of all. She held it high, and her shadow stretched across the path like a very tall fox.

Someone at the bend

Near a bend in the path, a small snail waited under a fern. “Is this the way to the old oak?” he asked. “I can hear the stories, but I cannot see the turn.”

Lumi lowered her lantern. In its warm circle she saw a silver trail, two smooth stones, and the tiny face looking up at her. “We can go together,” she said. “My light reaches the ground much better down here.”

The slower way

They went slowly. So slowly that Lumi noticed things she had never seen on her quick evening walks: a mushroom shaped like a teacup, a leaf with seven neat holes, and the first star reflected in a puddle.

The snail told her that stars in puddles were his favorite kind. They were the only stars he could visit without leaving the path. Lumi laughed softly and tilted the lantern so they could see one more.

Room in the circle

By the time they reached the old oak, the moon had risen. Lumi opened the jar, thanked the fireflies, and watched their tiny lights float into the branches. There was still a place beside the roots for a fox and a snail.

“What story did you bring?” asked Owl. Lumi looked at her new friend. “A story about a small light and the slower way home.” The snail settled into the moss, the leaves rustled overhead, and Lumi began.
